Today I have not one, but TWO excerpts from A.K. Taylor's The Neiko Adventure Saga! Before the excerpts, I'm going to let you guys read a bit about the books and get to know the author, A.K. Taylor. Want to know where you can find them? In short: Everywhere!

Neiko's Five Land Adventure
The Neiko Adventure Saga
Book One

However, during the unfolding of their plan, Neiko finds out that a land she thought she had only imagined is actually real - and more terrifying than she ever imagined. It turns out that Ramses - the arch-villain of her collection - has sinister plans of his own for Neiko, whom he eventually traps in Qari.

What's Up Wednesday

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what’s up. Should you wish to join us, you will find the link widget at the bottom of Jaime’s post. We really hope you will take part!

I've seen this over on Stephanie Allen's blog several times, and keep telling myself I am going to take part. But then I never do. Well, today that changes! Today, I remember that my blog is not only for spreading awesome books around, but for keeping in touch with my readers and friends. So, here goes!

What I'm Reading:
I'm on chapter ten of Communion by B. Patterson for the blog tour by Bewitching Blog Tours. I'm completely hooked. His vampires, the dhampir, are so fascinating and such a fresh take for me. It has been a while since I've read a book narrated from a male MC, but Lester is just so likeable and different from other male MCs I've seen. After I finish up Communion, I'll be reading Actuator: Fractured Earth by James Wymore and Aiden James and The Curse of Malenfer Manor by Iain McChesney.

What I'm Writing:
I'm still chugging along with Altar of Reality. I'm on the final chapters, so I should wrap that up soon. Right now it is sitting at 56k, so it is definitely going to be shorter than I am used to. I think there is definitely a sequel or two ahead for it.

What Inspires Me Right Now
I've been watching Revolution to try to get into a survivalist mindset with Altar of Reality. I'm really inspired by my sister, who is finally sitting down and writing one of her awesome ideas. We were bouncing ideas off each other today, and it was just plain thrilling.
My family has been very inspiring lately. They threw me an amazing release party this past Saturday night, complete with a countdown until midnight and balloons dropping--the whole she-bang. It was awesome, and I am so incredibly lucky to have such an awesome support system behind me.

What Else I'm Up To
I gave up my part time job so I can devote more time and brain power to writing. I hope to have three books written and ready for the editor by January, when I go back to school.
I just released Heirs of War and have been obsessively checking Amazon sales. Luckily, Smashwords only gets reports every quarter or so from its distributors, so I can't do that with anyone else. I've sold 6 books through Amazon, though. Yay!
The hubby and I are trying to come up with cool and unique Halloween costumes since we decided to throw a party this year. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress. =)

And that's it for me today. What have you guys been up to?

Guest Post & Giveaway: Dora Machado on Why We Write

With all the craziness that can come along with the writing business (and the crazy business of the voices in our heads that we bring to life on paper), people tend to scratch their heads and wonder why on earth we put ourselves through this. Here to answer that question is Dora Machado, author of The Curse Giver

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love My Writing Gig
By
Dora Machado
People are always asking me why I write. The truest answer has something to do with the fact that I can't stop writing. But I love what I do, and just in case the benefits of my chosen profession aren't obvious to the rest of the world, here are the top ten reasons why I absolutely love my writing gig:
10.  My daily commute entails a thirty-second shuffle from bed to desk.
9.  It's nine p.m. to five a.m. and I like it that way.
8.  My supervisor is a cat.
7. I can spend hours surfing the Internet, learning about ancient curses, medieval remedies, magical spells, curse givers and mythological goddesses, and nobody gives me grief about it.
6. The water cooler is out back. If I really need cooling, I swim in it.
5. I get to daydream and that's okay. My third grade teacher was so wrong about daydreaming!
4. Business casual = yoga pants. Casual Friday may occasionally involve flannel pajamas.
3.  I have to read a lot to write a lot. Well, if someone must make the tough sacrifices….
2.  During work hours, I live in my own world. Literally.
1. I get to share my work, life and passion with amazing readers like you.

Lusielle's bleak but orderly life as a remedy mixer is shattered when her husband betrays her and she is sentenced to die for a crime she didn't commit. She's on the pyre, about to be burned, when a stranger breaks through the crowd and rescues her from the flames.
Brennus, Lord of Laonia is the last of his line. He is caught in the grip of a mysterious curse that has murdered his kin, doomed his people and embittered his life. To defeat the curse, he must hunt a birthmark and kill the woman who bears it in the foulest of ways. Lusielle bears such a mark.

Stalked by intrigue and confounded by the forbidden passion flaring between them, predator and prey must come together to defeat not only the vile curse, but also the curse giver who has already conjured their ends.

Covenant of Thorns Series
Book Two

Blog Tour: Excerpt & Giveaway for Rivulet by Jamie Magee

Rivulet by Jamie Magee
Expected publication: October 7, 2013

Unfathomable forces have always contested Genevieve Indiana Falcon, known as Indie. The curse of her cold touch entraps her just as the grief ignited in her past torments her. Yet, her mysterious ability to dream while awake saturates her in the belief that she was not always anguished. There is hope that one day a true peace in her soul can be found.

Foolishly, Indie assumes she has contained her life in an odd balance, and she cherishes the visions she sees of the enigmatic boy that held her in a lost time, but can never reach. She grieves for a life she fears she'll never possess, and that grief is a weapon she uses against her aunt who stands between her and her inheritance.

Weeks away from her twenty-first birthday, the date where she would assume control over her family legacy, a night terror robs Indie of the balance she was clinging to. Like the dream she had before she lost her family, it predicts a fatal catastrophe on the horizon. The fight between life and death, good and evil, began the moment her thundering heart awoke her.

Everything changed after that dream. The one thing that keeps her curse at bay is stolen, and then the enigmatic boy arrives in the flesh. Face to face with her fiery born-again lover Indie realizes that the only way she can prevent the tragedy before her is to surrender everything she was, is, and could be.

Can she bend the laws of nature and fight the improbability that fire and ice could ever be one? As far as Indie is concerned, there is not a myth, spoken fate, or curse that is stronger than her stubborn desire to have it all ... including him.

About Jamie

Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she’d never been, introduce her to people she’s never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

Excerpt:
Once the glass hit the bar, Wilder took it away. His blue eyes met mine for the first time in months. “What’s going on, D?” he whispered.
When I didn’t answer, he urged me back into the hall that was out of the common view of the shop.
I didn’t want to look up at him. I didn’t think I could handle it. He pulled my chin up as a gasp of fog that reeked of whiskey seeped from my lips.
“You’re cold…and getting colder by the second,” he murmured, looking into my eyes.
I took in a deep breath, smelling the rich scent of lilies that always seemed to linger oddly close to his skin.
“I told you I was cold hearted. Tell me you remember that.”
Instantly, he had my arms pinned over my head. “And I told you I didn’t care how cold you were.” He breathed against my neck, which made the entire hall turn to ice for an instant. “When are you going to get off this stage and let me see the real D?” Wilder always had to be different. The ‘in’ before the ‘d’ in my nickname was just too much for him to say.
One glance to his arm revealed a jagged gash. “What did you do to your arm?” I gasped as I averted my gaze, regretting those shots I took. If I was going insane, I wanted to be sober when that happened.
“Slipped on the snow, glass was on the ground.”
I broke free from him and crossed my arms. This was shaping up to be one of the weirdest days of my life. How could one dream predict two different wounds on my friends?

Curiosity Quills Gives Back with New Anthology

Curiosity Quills just released two new anthologies, Primetime and After Dark, and are donating ten percent of the proceeds to select "no-kill" humane societies on the East and West coasts. So not only do you get to read some amazing short stories from authors like James Wymore, Mike Robinson, Sharon Bayliss, and Eliza Tilton (all of whom I have featured on this blog--no bias or anything =D ), but you get to help a great cause by giving to our furry friends in need. I am a big supporter of no-kill humane societies. I got my cat, Sweetie, from one almost ten years ago.

Here's a bit about the books, the stories in them, and where you can purchase them:

And Death Shall Have No Dominion – K.H. Koehler
Sometimes dead really is better… but not always attainable. A Nick Englebrecht short.

Cyber Cowboy – James Wymore
An accountant, separated from the woman he loves, must decide if he has what it takes to save her from the horrible fate dealt when the Actuator turns her half of the city into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Dark Orb – Tony Healey
It’s 1985 and young George is going to encounter some of the darkness that people face in their lives, and come to understand how they manage to live with it… if they are able to.

Ephemera – Gerilyn Marin
While touring a house for signs of a paranormal activity, amateur psychic consultant Giselle Boudreaux has a frightening encounter unlike anything she’s experienced before.

The Fridge – J.R. Rain
A man buys a top-of-the-line kitchen appliance and watches, horrified, how it quickly puts his life on ice. But when he wins and manages to put himself out of its reach by what most would call spectacularly losing, the FRIDGE has the last laugh.

Ghost Placers – Nina Post
When the owner of a ghost relocation service gets the chance to land a lucrative contract that would change his life forever, he must decide if achieving the success he’s always dreamed of is really worth the cost.

Gothic Gwen – A.W. Exley
It’s not the constant taunts from the other kids driving sixteen year old Gwen bat shit crazy, but the white hot pain spiking through her brain. Seeking refuge in her small sanctuary, she wants to know why, just for once, can’t the cosmos cut a girl some slack?

How I Killed the Drama – Mike Robinson
A traveling salesman, staying overnight in an out-of-the-way hotel, stumbles upon the astonishing secret of humankind’s every teardrop and every turmoil, and resolves to take advantage.

Mad Science – Sharon Bayliss
Nothing can stand in the way of Heather marrying her true love. Even her fiancee’s death. Both love and science are best when done madly…

On the Rocks – William Vitka
In the quest for Earth’s resources, there is space…and there is madness in the black.

Razor Child – Michael Shean
In a society so glittering, it feels like shards of ice cutting through tender skin, there arises a Mother that feeds Her Razor children enough of a pap of truth and lies to make them do anything with a madman’s smile. Literally anything.

Sinergy – A.E. Propher & Grace Eyre
Antoine DeLongville, once a high-ranking member of the Catholic Church, flees from the secretive Order after he discovers their plot to target the only woman he’s ever loved. His journey is marked with both extreme danger and remarkable fortune, as if unseen forces are waging a war over his fate.

Tell Us Everything – Randy Attwood
Goth girl connects her piercings to perceive the truths around her and starts broadcasting the news.

The Caw – Eliza Tilton
Lena’s plan is to spend one perfect night with Johnny Ridge; regardless if it’s in a creepy cemetery, but as the night twists, and her best friend disappears, Lena discovers some things are more terrifying than the dead.

The Damned and the Dangerous – Michael Panush
La Cruz looks like an average Southern California small town, but it has some dark secrets – and it has its guardians. They are the supernaturally adept drivers of Donovan Motors, including zombie greaser Roscoe, who stand between La Cruz and chaos with only their wits and some fast hot rods to help them.

The Last Carnivale – Vicki Keire
Roaming the forbidden surface of her burnt and twisted world, the princess of ash and cinders finds hope one day too late.

The Milgram Battery – Matthew Graybosch
Obedience isn’t always a virtue, and defiance isn’t always a sin.

The Notebook – Randy Attwood
College professor returns to his student apartment to see if a notebook he left in the attic is still there; some truths are better left untold.

The Pearl – Rand B. Lee
Fantasy lovers are inexorably drawn to the borderlands of consensus reality. In this story, Rand B. Lee explores the twilight realm between death and afterlife from the viewpoint of one of society’s most despised castoffs.

Trevor – Nathan Yocum
Cargo Specialist Trevor Ponsi wakes up for his shift–just like any other day. Oddly enough, the crew has vanished, the vessel is wildly off-course, and the ship’s AI insists on holding Trevor hostage until he can win a round of tic-tac-toe. What exactly happened while he was asleep?

Find Curiosity Quills: Primetime online:

Primetime’s steamier counterpart, Curiosity Quills: After Dark, is where bestselling authors like A.W. Exley, Nathan L. Yocum, Jose Prendes, Jade Hart, and more come together to bring you hard-hitting, sexy, violent, and dark short stories to read when the sun has gone down and the kids are in bed.

Included Short Stories:

Mirror Amour - Jade Hart
When a sex circus plants itself unapologetically in the middle of her busy life, a young microbiologist finds herself tumbling headlong into a night of unbridled sensuality that takes her straight to a fork in the road that will forever shred her comfy boring world.

Pop Star Fist Fight - Jose Prendes
A handful of midgets. Two starlets. One shot at a title of the Queen of Pop. Fame Fucking Hurts.

Precious Blood - Gerilyn Marin
Weary of her existence as a vampire, Annalese seeks the truth to a legend which says she may live again if she consumes the blood of a fallen angel. Misunderstandings, and a not necessarily willing Fallen One, bring about an unforeseen turn of events.

The Quark Machine - Nathan Yocum
Professor Northwip invents an AI computer that can self-replicate on a nano-scale. His exploration of infinitely small realities is cut short when he suddenly wakes up naked on an island with no memories of how he got there. What perilous dangers has Professor Northwip unleashed? Who fears the true nature of the Quark Machine?

The Quarry - A W Exley
Jema Johnson delivers a pounding in the court room, but it's the pounding at the base of her skull draining her spirit and sanity, until a one night encounter in a club offers far more than a headache cure.

A mother writes a farewell letter to her adopted son before being shipped off to a concentration camp for those inflicted with HVV, Human Vampirism Virus
